Digging up gifts for the gardener
December 11, 1998
Are you a person who longs for tranquillity in your life? Of course
you are. But in our modern society, who has the time? Now it's
possible to get the Zen without the wait via "The Art of the Bonsai
Potato Kit."
Using semi-ancient techniques, the Seattle-based think tank
Bottled Lightning! has put together a package that provides
everything you need to placate the desire for inner peace and
learn shortcuts to patience fast.
"The Art of Bonsai Potato Kit" includes a 64-page book on the
how and why of the art. There is a state-of-the-art replica of an
actual bonsai potato altar (plastic dish) and a package of support
medium (black pebbles). All you supply is your own potato.
Actually, you probably have one or two of these "bonsai
potatoes" already sprouting in your sack of old potatoes.
If this sounds a little bit like the "Pet Rock of 1998," you're right. But the Pet Rock just sat there and gathered moss; the bonsai
potato actually grows. The kit is both funny and fascinating.
The bonsai potato kit is the work of Jeffrey E. Fitzsimmons, with
illustrations by Mike Dillon and photography by Jim Linna. It's
available at Borders, and can be ordered at www.bonsaipotato.com. For information, call Andrews McMeel at (800) 826-4216. The suggested retail price is $14.95.
